Racetrack Memory

IBM has recently developed a new type of memory storage device they are calling Racetrack memory. It’s supposed to hold up to 100 times more information than hard drives and flash drives do. So if they used this new memory in an Ipod it would be able to hold up to 500,000 songs, whereas the highest capacity now in an Ipod is 40,000.

Racetrack memory uses similar technology to Flash, in that they don’t use any moving parts, which eliminates the chance of it crashing and losing all the memory. But, it is much better because you can rewrite on the memory an unlimited number of times without it wearing down unlike Flash drives.

Sounds like a pretty cool deal for storing memory, but they still have yet to perfect it, so it is said to not be coming out for a few more years. :-/
