I don’t know if you would say that a GPS device for a poodle is a must have, but when you’re paying a few thousand dollars for a nicely trained hunting dog, it’s not such a bad idea. Garmin, of course, leads the field in GPS technology or at least their the best at getting their product out to the people.
They make a device specifically for following hunting dogs called the Garmin Astro 220 and it’s one of the better Garmin Dog Tracking Systems made. Its got about all of the options you would expect and want. Nice screen, waterproof case, microwSD card slot for maps and extra memory, USB port to connect to a computer, and a High-sensitivity GPS receiver. The device will transmit a dog’s signal as often as every 5 seconds. One of the features that is especially useful to hunters is that your display screen will show you not only where you dogs are but also creates a trail of the dogs movements showing the ground your dog has already covered. Here’s a few more impressive features:
- Shows you if your dog is moving or if it is standing still, “on point” with something in its sites.
- Tracks up to 10 dogs at once.
- You can mark where each bird was retrieved and include the elevation, time, etc.
At around $500 it’s worth the price if you’re going to do a decent amount of hunting.
