Trash For Fuel

To reduce fleet and greenhouse gas emissions, Waste Management, the largest waste management company in North America is going to start using landfill trash for gasoline. The trash will have to go through a process of purifying and liquefying to produce 13,000 gallons of natural gas (in liquid form) a day.

This project will be started in 2009 and will come the heavy price tag of $15.5 million. Luckily the benefits outweigh this and the goal is to reduce fleet emissions 15% by 2020, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 30,000 tons each year. This new gas called LNG is a cleaner fuel that releases less nitrogen oxide, carbon dioxide, and other harmful gases, than regular diesel fueled engines. So all in all a better choice for our environment.
